Work Year: 184 days
Work Day: 8 hours per day
FTE: Full time, 1.0 FTE
Salary: ACE 6 $39,204 – $52,537 DOE
The Federal Programs Community Counselor supports the unique needs of Anchorage School District students served by federal programs such as English Language Learners and Child in Transition. The community counselor contributes to successful student outcomes by providing academic guidance and collaborating with community organizations and Anchorage School District interdisciplinary teams. The position has a retirement association with the Public Employees’ Retirement System (PERS).
The following are required:
A bachelor’s degree in social work, education, Indigenous studies, or a related field. Equivalent experience, education, and training may be considered in lieu of the degree requirement.
Experience working in an educational setting.
The following are preferred:
Four years of experience working with students in an educational setting.
Preferred experience working with English language learners, children in transition, and students with disabilities.
Ability to network with professionals involved in post-secondary education and employment agencies.
Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills.
Knowledge of community resources and services available to CIT/and or ELL students in Anchorage.
Essential Job Functions
Assists families and students in transition from outside and within ASD schools by connecting them with resources within the school system and the community.
Implements actions and maintains records that show types of supports students need, receive, and how those resources were connected to the student.
Follows through in assisting students with connecting to useful resources as well as providing academic guidance to improve academic outcomes such as attendance, school work, graduation rates, and access to college and career opportunities.
Responds to parent, student, teacher, and staff requests for assistance with needs and services.
Coordinates school events and meetings that contribute to helping CIT/and or ELL students.
Consults and collaborates with community agencies, organizations, and Anchorage School District interdisciplinary teams to maximize educational and extracurricular opportunities for students and families.
Maintains constant effective written and oral communication with students, parents/guardians, school staff and administration, local agencies, and members of the community to inform and address the needs of individual students to improve services and outcomes.
Monitors student records such as grades, attendance, and credits regularly and consults and collaborates with teachers, counselors, building principal and families to assist with developing and implementing services that address social, academic, and cultural needs.
Attends school events such as parent/teacher conferences and open house nights to promote the CIT and or ELL programs and provides services at school events.
Furthers knowledge by attending assigned training and professional development.
Promotes, publicizes, and connects students to opportunities such as college/career readiness, culture nights, community events, credit recovery and homework help, and other enrichment opportunities for student outcomes.
Maintains organization and completes projects and tasks in a timely manner.
Elevates concerns to district level leadership such as supervisors of CIT or ELL when necessary.
Physical /Mental Demands
The physical demands of this job require frequent standing, walking, sitting, speaking and hearing. Specific visual abilities are also required. The employee is regularly required to reach with his/her hands and arms and occasionally lift items weighing less than 40 lbs. Additionally, the employee must be able to understand vague and implicit instructions, be able to readily recall facts and details, handle conflict and make effective decisions under pressure. The employee must have the ability to effectively manage the stress of working with students, parents, and other employees representing diverse cultures, personalities, and work styles in a dynamic work environment.
