Community Food Systems Specialist VISTA
The City and County of Honolulu’s (“City”) AmeriCorps VISTA Program was established in 2018 to strengthen the city government’s efforts to increase community resilience across the island of O’ahu, Hawai’i. The City VISTA Program embeds VISTA Members in multiple City departments to enhance the capacity of the various departments to respond to the challenges of shocks and stressors like high costs of living, natural disasters, and climate change. In alignment with the VISTA program’s mission, City VISTA Members strive to build capacity, create sustainable solutions, empower communities, and alleviate poverty. The Community Food Policy Analyst VISTA position serves in both the City’s Office of Climate Change, Sustainability and Resiliency (“Resilience Office”) and Office of Economic Revitalization (OER). The Resilience Office coordinates initiatives across City departments to mitigate and adapt to the impacts of climate change. OER is responsible for creating economic diversity and resilience in O’ahu’s communities in the post-COVID environment and in preparation for impacts of future economic stressors. This full-time VISTA position will play a key role in developing programs that increase the accessibility, affordability, and sustainability of O’ahu’s local food systems, particularly for low-income and other historically underserved residents. This position will work with the Resilience Office’s Food Security and Sustainability Program and will support implementation of priority food resilience initiatives through research and partnership development. The ideal candidate for this position will have strong research, writing, and communication skills; demonstrated knowledge in sustainable food systems and climate change, particularly for island communities; and a deep commitment to equity and climate resilience on O’ahu. This year-long position begins August 29, 2022 and is based on the island of O’ahu in Honolulu, Hawai’i.

Member Duties : The Community Food Policy Analyst VISTA will focus on supporting the development of new and existing food-based partnerships, networks, and initiatives. Specific activities include: (1) Conduct research on successful strategies for promoting island food security, access, and sustainability for poverty reduction and climate change preparedness and provide recommendations for best practices; (2) Support the development of stakeholder networks that will collaboratively identify and propose holistic, innovative solutions to improve local food systems and access, spur local economic development, and make food systems more environmentally sustainable and socially just; (3) Support community engagement discussions to ensure City initiatives reflect the needs of the community and engage underserved populations; and (4) Develop online communications resources that engage underserved residents in City programs that support access to healthy and local foods while reducing costs of living.
