Community Forestry Specialist VISTA
The City and County of Honolulu’s (“City”) AmeriCorps VISTA Program was established in 2018 to strengthen city government’s efforts to increase community resilience across the island of O‘ahu, Hawai‘i. The City VISTA Program embeds VISTA Members in multiple City departments to enhance the capacity of the departments to respond to the challenges of shocks and stressors like high costs of living, natural disasters, and climate change. In alignment with the VISTA program’s mission, City VISTA Members strive to build capacity, create sustainable solutions, empower communities, and alleviate poverty. The City’s most recent urban tree canopy assessment shows a decline in both number of trees across O’ahu and their canopy cover. Simultaneously, Hawai’i continues to experience hotter temperatures with a rapidly increasing rate of warming. Lack of and disproportionate tree canopy cover and exposure to extreme heat not only impacts public health, but also leaves frontline communities even more economically vulnerable when mitigating or adapting to heat risks. DUF’s community forestry programs serve to increase community awareness of and engagement with urban forestry initiatives to ensure they reflect and support local community and geographic tree canopy needs. The Community Forestry Specialist VISTA aims to support development of a Community Canopy & Tree Equity Program that allows local community ambassadors to increase the number of trees planted and maintained in their neighborhoods. Through research, planning, and partnership and resource development, the VISTA will lay the foundation for DUF staff to implement the program with community over the next two years.

Member Duties : The Community Forestry Specialist will focus on improving outreach and engagement strategies and making accessible new forms of data that can inform development of urban forestry resources and programs. Specific activities include: (1) Support creation of strategic planning and implementation documents for development of a Community Canopy & Tree Equity Program. (2) Map existing partnerships and networks and identify potential new partners to serve as connectors to community tree canopy ambassadors. (3) Develop resource guides and training documents for future community tree canopy ambassadors. (4) Develop systems for collecting program data and measuring impact. (5) Conduct research on community forestry plans and best practices in other jurisdictions to support DUF’s long-range planning efforts. (6) Support existing partnerships to deliver annual community events.
